Just Say What You Mean

The term “flip-flopper” has been around in politics for quite some time now and it gained a lot of prominence in the 2000 when John Kerry and then-President George Bush were facing off for the presidency. All of the negative adverts from the Bush campaign proclaimed Kerry as a “flip-flopper” and his ratings began to sink. The term is powerful and no politician wants to get branded as a flip-flopper in the media. But former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, known for his involvement in passing through the US’s controversial online casino gambling ban, is increasing being associated with the term for his comments about the health care bill.

Health care reform is a “big issue” in Congress right now and the US media are really focused on covering all of the pros and cons of the health care reform debate – and that includes Frist’s position on the bill. Frist was one of the key members of Congress that snuck the UIGEA through Congress as a part of a must-pass bill. His actions have wreaked havoc with the international online casino gambling industry and he gained a lot of foes in the process – which was fine since he retired in the same year that the UIGEA passed. He is back in the political arena though and both proclaiming and denying his support for the health care bill that is currently before Congress.

It seems that Frist is keen on appealing to his supporters of the moment, even if that means flip-flopping on the same exact issue in just a week’s time. Just like in the online casino gambling situation, Frist appeals to special interest groups and he is not willing to risk his key base of supporters.
