Lacking Liberty with Online Casinos
In the land of the free, where the American dream is still palatable in come
communities and children are taught that this is the land of opportunity, it
seems that some are questioning the US government’s decision to invade the homes
of Americans with a ban on the online casino gambling industry. The UIGEA is a
highly controversial piece of legislation that has greatly limited the freedoms
that Americans have when it comes to the internet gambling industry. Internet
gambling takes place on a personal level within homes and private residences…the
fact that many Americans have long enjoyed the online casinos as a hobby and
pastime has sparked outrage that the US government passed a law that so severely
cuts in on the personal right to wager from their home.
Poll results in the United States indicate that the vast majority of Americans
believe that internet gambling should be legal in the US. The key argument for
blocking the offshore online casinos is just not valid when the effective
regulations of the UK are taken into account. A USA Today survey indicated that
support for legal online casino gambling was as high as 90 percent.
Interestingly, the microcosm of the US that was polled in the survey were able
to make the distinction between their own moral standpoint and the concept of
liberty that the US harks on. In the land of the free there should be a right to
choose. If you are opposed to the online casino gambling industry then don’t
take part; and on the flip side, if you do enjoy internet gambling as a hobby
then you have the right to gamble responsibly.
It’s that fundamental right to choose that Americans support. Although the
online casino gambling industry is highly controversial the US government is
overstepping its bounds with the gambling bans and blocks.
