Investigation Underway
Eastern European football clubs have raised a red flag at the UEFA Cup for
suspected match-fixing, a charge that is being taken extremely seriously these
days with a United Kingdom’s strong desire to really limit the influence of land
and online casino betting companies on the sporting games. The industry media
has been alight lately with concerns about maintaining the integrity of sports
by keeping the internet betting companies under tighter regulations. The
argument against new regulations within the industry has always been the fact
that the gambling groups themselves monitor the betting patterns at land and
online casino betting and report suspicious activity. All of these concerns have
made the industry extremely cautious and the announcement that the governing
body for European football is investigating as many as forty UEFA Cup and
Champions League games has made some wary.
If the governing body does uncover match-fixing in the games it could be just
the impetus that the UK and European governments need to launch new regulations
aimed specifically at the online casino sports betting companies. On the more
positive side is the fact that initial information indicates that the focus lies
primarily within the Eastern European internet gambling teams and the major UK
and European football teams appear to be left out of the investigation.
The concern right now is that some of the teams may have anticipated that they
were not going to be in these major competitions until the end so they instead
chose to make a bit of profit by match-fixing their games on their way out of
the UEFA Cup and Champion’s League games. The games under investigation go back
as far as five years although many are within the last two years. |
