WAAG: India: Online Casinos
An installment in our World at a Glance Series: India has long been a country of
contradictions – extreme wealth juxtaposed with dire poverty and illness. The
country though has really changed in the past decade as increased internet
access and outsourcing of labor brings new educational and job opportunities to
the masses. The online casinos have really not shown a keen interest in the
Indian market until recently because of the vase amounts of poverty in the
country. Now though, pockets of wealth have emerged around the vast country and
these areas are key targets for an emerging interest in an Indian online casino
gambling and betting industry. The Province of Sikkim is one of the first
wealthier regions of India to consider the benefits of a licensed internet
gambling industry in the country.
As the Province of Sikkim announced plans to license online casino gambling and
betting in the region, the interest in Indian internet gambling has really
exploded. The Indian market has the potential to really surge in growth over the
next decade as high speed and broadband internet access makes its way into more
and more regions of the country. With all of the potential money in mind, and
the knowledge that the Indian market is currently entirely untapped, the foreign
online casinos are vying for one of the first Indian gaming licenses from the
Province of Sikkim.
Several of the big international gambling brands have already announced their
intention to obtain an online casino gambling and betting license from the
Province of Sikkim as a first level of entry into the Indian market. Other
gaming sites are also keeping a close eye on how Sikkim’s licensing process
progresses before considering entry into the untouched and untapped Indian
internet gambling market. |
