WAAG: Germany: Online Casino Sites
Unfortunately for the online casino gambling sites, there is not always a lot of
understanding and acceptance of this chance-based gambling industry in some of
the European Union (and globally for that matter). The Internet gambling
industry as a whole is highly controversial because there are many opponents who
believe that internet gambling contributes to higher levels of addictive and
underage gambling. The pervasiveness of this belief is a major contributing
factor to why countries like Germany are able maintain in-state online casino
gambling and betting monopolies, protectionist policies that feed on the belief
that internet gambling sites cannot be effectively regulated.
At this point, Germany does not allow any actual online casinos to operate in
the German market. The only land and internet gambling company in operation is a
state-run gambling monopoly that accepts all of the lottery and betting business
from all sixteen German states. Prior to January 1, 2009 there were many
in-state locally German companies offering lottery services. The full
legislation though took effect on the first of this year and all of the lottery
and betting activity was funneled into a state monopoly that then feeds the
state budget.
There is a huge foreign interest in the lucrative German online casino gambling
market but there is no entry path at this point. Although EU policies state that
the foreign EU internet betting and lottery companies should have equal access,
until that legislation actually takes effect the foreign companies have to stay
out of the German market or face valid German court action against the
companies. |
