WAAG: France: Overview
Like so many countries right now, France is currently in the midst of a major
restructuring of gambling laws that concern the country’s land and online casino
gambling industry. The French government has supported a state-run gambling
market that excluded competition from foreign gambling companies. As a part of
the European Union however, France is held to very specific and strict
requirements that call for all EU member-states to allow the free-trade of goods
and services between EU member-states. The French government refused compliance
with the European Commission’s request for new and inclusive gambling
regulations that welcomed foreign online casinos to compete for French gambling
business. More recently, the French government is working toward compliance with
the Commission and new regulations have been drafted and are in the final stages
of approval.
Interestingly, although the French government is near implementation of new
online casino gambling legislation, there is still controversy concerning the
specifics of the proposed French legislation. As far as the market is concerned,
several of the largest land and online casino betting and gambling companies are
vying for entry into the market and are currently prepping themselves for the
licensing process.
There is every anticipation that the new French gambling regulations will pass
through into law in the next several months and online casinos are preparing for
this emerging market. Land and internet gambling is already quite popular within
the French market and foreign companies are eager to launch gambling sites that
will appeal to the discerning French market and offer these foreign companies a
piece of the lucrative French gaming market.
