WAAG: France: Online Casinos
Although the French gambling market is on the verge of fully launching and
offering up a competitive market for online casino gambling, betting, poker, and
bingo, the industry is not yet open and the regulations are still in the final
stages of implementation. The French government has consistently worked with
European officials to draft fair and inclusive internet gambling laws that will
support the key tenants of the EU policies while also bringing in revenue to the
country’s government and keeping French gamblers safe. As the final tweaks are
made to the new regulations the French government has asked foreign online
casinos to respect the process and stay out of the French market until the new
laws come into effect.
Some gambling sites have not heeded the request and a peeved French government
has publicly made an example out of Zeturf, a Maltese online casino gambling
company that ran a full page advert in a French daily newspaper. Zeturf is one
of the first internet gambling companies to blatantly defy the French
government’s request and current laws and may lose any ability for legal
licensing in the French market as a result of the stunt. Other online casinos
are literally chomping at the bit to enter the French market but yet are willing
to adhere to the government’s policies and enter the market legally, through
full licensing.
The French market has already been introduced to online casino gambling through
the state monopoly, Groupe Francaise des Jeux, and the gambling sites anticipate
that French gamblers will welcome the broader and more competitive market that
licensing will provide. Internet gambling sites that do eventually obtain a
French gambling license will then have to follow the detailed regulations that
are in place to maintain tight control over the French gambling market. |
