Fanning Flames of Online Casinos
David Carruthers withdrew his previous “guilty” plea and in the process has
negated the plea agreement that he had struck with the US prosecutors working
the case. This case has struck a cord in the international online casino
gambling industry because it demonstrate just how far the US is willing to go to
uphold its highly controversial bans on the international gambling industry. The
US has several of the top-level executives under arrest for their involvement in
BetonSports and for operating online casinos and services within the US market.
The problem rising up now is that these cases are just stretching out into
infinity and the international community is wondering just how much
international reach the US should have in a case such as this one.
There is no clear reason on just why Carruthers changed his plea and dismissed
the plea agreement just days before he was to face the courts for sentencing.
There was a slight chance that Carruthers would have to serve an additional 33
months in prison in addition to the three years he has now spent on house arrest
if the presiding sentencing judge so chose. Additionally, no other executives in
the case have changed their pleas and Carruthers would have to testify against
all of these individuals if he progressed with the plea agreement.
The whole case just reeks of injustice and the US is certainly overstepping its
boundaries. The World Trade Organization has ruled that the UIGEA contravenes
international trade agreements and yet the US Department of Justice continues to
prosecute individuals and companies based on this flawed legislation that does
not have the support of the international community and is certainly objected to
by the online casino gambling industry. |
