Details of the Boom
Russian officials are quite concerned about the surprising influx of illegal
online casino gambling activities in the country and the booming instant lottery
market that has surged forward in the gaping hole in the market left by exiting
land gambling venues. Over the summer, newly enforced Russian legislation forced
the closure of hundreds of land gambling venues throughout all of Russia’s major
cities. As the land gambling venues closed down instant lottery operations have
cropped up in their wake. Additionally, the internet cafes have now seen an
opportunity for a booming market in relation to the online casinos. Although
internet gambling is illegal in the country and land gambling in the major
metropolitan areas of Russia, there are few actually measures in place to stop
illegal internet gambling from flourishing.
The Deputy Major in Moscow, Sergei Baidakov, is very concerned about the rise in
surrogate technologies that are now replacing the gap left by the land casinos.
According to Baidakov nearly 200 of the previous gambling establishments are now
being re-purposed to support the sale of instant lottery tickets. The venues are
already familiar to gamblers and the instant lottery industry has simply surged
almost overnight. Gamblers who were previously content to use the land gambling
venues are now seeking out internet cafes with the hope of easily accessing the
illegal online casinos.
One of the plus sides to this new boom in the lotteries and online casino
gambling industry is a hope that these surrogate technologies will provide jobs
for the hundreds of thousand land gambling employees who lost their jobs over
the summer. |
