Players for Changes
The Lisbon Treaty was complacently accepted by many EU member-states in the past
elections and fought vehemently by other nations (Ireland was very opposed to
joining the Lisbon Treaty but a passed the legislation in a re-vote). And though
the Lisbon Treaty may have some key issues, the “Citizens Initiative” provision
gives some very strong power back to the citizens of the European Union.
Supporters of an open online casino gambling industry in the EU have launched
the Right2Bet campaign in an effort to force the EU Parliament to take action on
the internet gambling issue. Essentially, the citizens are looking for the
Parliament to liberalize the EU market and pass legislation that clearly
outlines the expectations that EU member-states participate in an open market.
Several EU member-states are stubbornly maintaining their current online casino
gambling monopolies and have refused negotiations and request from the European
Commission for more open internet gambling laws. The Commission has asked all EU
member-states to comply with the EU’s policies regarding the free trade of goods
and services between EU member-states. The Right2Bet campaign will pick up where
the Commission’s efforts have failed. Although the Commission is actively
supporting and working toward an open gambling environment for online casinos,
the negotiations are time-consuming and lengthy and the EU Parliament has
refused to come to the aid of the Commission with some clear legislation on the
topic.
To that end, if the Right2Bet campaign gathers one million signatures in support
of the online casino gambling then the EU Parliament will be forced to put the
issue on the agenda and directly address the EU’s internet gambling policies. |
