US States Want Betting
The federal laws in the United States that have banned the offshore online
casino gambling industry from accessing US gamblers are still staying strong and
in place more than three years after their passage. There have been huge
movements to change the regulations for the US gambling industry, but that has
yet to really happen at this point. One factor that could really speed up the
rate of change in the US though are the individual US states that are starting
to demand the right to offer in-state land and online betting and gambling
options. Interestingly, the US federal legislation does not specifically outline
what the US states can prohibit or legislate within their own borders where
online casino gambling and betting is concerned.
This fact has led states like Iowa to take bold moves toward the legalization of
forms of online casino gambling and betting. With the recession still causing
budgetary fears throughout the state governments, even New Jersey is now
actively looking for ways to pass internet betting legislation that will take
into account all of the US federal regulatory concerns, but also bring in new
gambling revenue for the state governments.
The former governor for New Jersey, Jon S Corzine, is specifically is looking
for a way to legalize sportsbetting in the state. There is a big fight in the US
right now over allowing land and online casino betting at the state level –
sporting groups heatedly argue that this sort of mass-scale internet betting
will lead to corruption in the US sporting industry. Corzine advocates that the
US states have a constitutional right to offer sports betting, there’s no
telling at this point how much success he will have in pursuing that argument.
There is a very real hope in the industry that Barney Frank’s proposed
legislation will pass before this current Congressional session ends. |
