US Implementation Threats
The United States market is just a whirlwind of change right now as the struggle
between proponents and opponents of a legalized US online casino gambling
industry play their cards and fight out the final leg of this major battle that
has lasted for the past three years. The conservative and Republican right
passed the UIGEA into law three years ago in a controversial manner that upset a
lot of politicians. But the damage was done. Over the past three years the
highly flawed UIGEA has been debated intensely all over the US and throughout
the world in fact, since foreign online casinos are specifically affected by
this legislation. More recently, as Barney Frank’s counter legislation gains
support as a way to neutralize/repeal the UIGEA and those UIGEA supporters are
pushing harder than ever to fully bring the UIGEA into law.
The UIGEA came with highly ambiguous wording and a lot of controversy over the
enforcement measures that it would take to effectively ban financial
transactions with offshore online casinos. Over the past three years though the
support legislation has been developed and now several US senators are making a
big push to have the draft regulations pushed into effect before the current
Congressional session ends. The supporters of a liberalized US online casino
gambling industry are fighting Senators Kyl and Bachus every step right now to
keep the status quo long enough for Frank’s new legislation to take effect.
One key problem with the UIGEA support regulations, and the UIGEA in general, is
that it creates a protected US market that violates international trade
agreements and is mostly designed to keep online casinos from competing in the
current US betting and gambling markets. |
