A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
Ask the conservative right in the United States just why they opposed the online
casino gambling industry and one of the key answers is likely going to be the
danger that internet gambling poses to the US consumers. Internet gambling has
some drawbacks in the form of problem gambling and an alleged increased
likelihood that underage gamblers can access the sites. The danger aspect of
gambling is the key scare tactic that the internet gambling opposition uses to
frighten US consumers into believing that banning the industry is the only way
to keep illegal and dangerous gambling out of the US market. Interestingly
enough, these same conservative right US politicians who pushed the
controversial UIGEA into law are not pushing for the continued seizure of bank
accounts associated with offshore online casinos.
Essentially, the conservative right has made these threats that the online
casino gambling industry is dangerous a self-fulfilling prophecy. All of the
latest seizures of bank accounts that were processing payments for offshore
online casinos now means that all of those US gamblers who were expecting
payments have no lost all of their money and any method of receiving their
gambling funds. The offshore gambling sites are actively working on alternative
payment methods, but the danger is there now. US gamblers are now more afraid of
the US government’s actions than they ever were about the gambling industry.
The US government’s actions have meant that thousands of US online casino
gamblers are sitting in their homes wondering about the safety of their payment
transactions – this was never such a big concern until the US federal government
began to aggressively pursue the seizure of gambling related bank accounts – now
they have instilled the fear. Good job.
