Possible Further Action
The French government is in the process of finalizing a full set of new gambling
regulations that it is anticipated will fully take effect at the beginning of
2010. Right now though, France regulators are pretty strict on enforcing the old
regulations that, while controversial and not supported by the European
Commission, are the last word that the French government has passed through on
the issue. The fact that online casinos and gambling sites have long been banned
and blocked from the French market is the issue that Unibet is now facing as the
company has to decide whether to accept the court’s ruling that Unibet was in
the wrong for accepting French bets on Tennis matches. The case pitted the
Fédération Française de Tennis (FFT) against this medium-sized online casino
gambling and betting group.
Unibet is just one of many European online casino betting companies that has
protested monopolistic gambling policies in EU countries by ignoring the bans
and continuing to offer betting services. And although Unibet had a strong case
and fought the case in court against the FFT, in the end the court ruled that
Unibet was in the wrong and subject to paying a Euro 1.3 million fine. The crux
of the current dilemma is whether Unibet should still fight the case and repeal
it to a higher court. With the French regulations soon to change into more
liberal and EU-friendly policies, there is a chance that Unibet will end up
spending that same fine amount in a continued litigation process.
Some of the rulings coming down from the court are still pretty questionable and
most online casino gambling and betting industry analysts agree that the
gambling group still has a strong case despite this initial ruling. The new
French regulations are the key chip – once they are enacted there is a thought
that Unibet will have a stronger case. |
