Netherlands Under Fire
The Dutch government is facing one major fight in the coming weeks and months as
several key online casino gambling companies push the Dutch regulations banning
foreign internet gambling companies from accessing the Dutch market to the EU
government for closer review. The Netherlands is just one of the handful of EU
countries that are violating EU policies in an attempt to protect state
monopolies and force all foreign competition out of the market. As the EU
situation matures, several key online casinos are pushing the issue; Ladbrokes
and Betfair have announced a formal protestation of the Dutch protectionist
policies that are forbidding both of these internet gambling companies to
legally operate with the Dutch market.
Both Betfair and Ladbrokes are highly reputable online casino gambling groups
with impeccable reputations within the gambling industry. Additionally, both
companies have attempted to enter the market legally before they began to force
their way into the Dutch market. Betfair even went so far as to apply for a
Dutch gambling license, so that the company could legally offer betting and
games of chance to Dutch citizens. The gambling group was told that it did not
qualify for a Dutch license. Other online casinos and gambling groups have
similarly been forced out of the market.
The case has finally made it to the European Court of Justice and the online
casino gambling industry has a lot of hope that the ECJ will set a formal
precedence for the entire EU. If the ECJ ruling is in favor of the case
presented by the internet gambling companies, then this would have a trickling
effect on the other EU member-states that are blocking gambling sites and facing
ECJ review as well. Conversely, a ruling in favor of the Dutch right to protect
and block internet gambling will cause some serious setbacks as online gambling
companies look for greater purchase within the currently closed EU markets. |
