More Democratic Support
As the United States nears the point where Barney Frank’s proposed online casino
regulatory bill has to be addressed in Congress, the support is mounting among
the Democrats and they are eagerly pushing for a last big push. Although
Congressman Barney Frank does have bi-partisan support for his bill o repeal the
UIGEA and instead pass full licensing and regulations for US online casinos, the
main thrust of the support does come from the Democrats. Jared Polis, a
Democratic Representative, is an out-right supporter of internet freedoms and he
has just laid his weight behind the internet gambling issue in an effort to stop
the federal ban on offshore online gambling companies because from the
perspective that the ban unconstitutionally limits the internet freedoms of
Americans.
Polis is not the first politician to link the UIGEA to a ban on internet
freedoms. In fact, President Obama made internet censorship one of his platform
issues – yet he has yet to deliver on his initial claims that he wanted to open
the internet and stop unnecessary censorship, particularly where the online
casinos are concerned. Polis though is a outspoken support of internet freedoms
and he wrote an in depth article about the UIGEA and the infringement that this
bill has on American freedoms. The offshore online casino gambling sites are
blocked and gamblers are forbidden to even engage in internet gambling from the
privacy of their own homes.
Polis’ article in the Roll Call News highlighted the crux of the dilemma from
the viewpoint of those who may not even particularly support the online casinos,
but rather from the idea that limiting internet freedoms at this stage of the
platforms development is an extremely dangerous precedent. |
