Canada Investing in Awareness
The government of Ontario is not willing to sit back and watch problem gambling
become an issue that plagues the country as land and online casino gambling
continue to expand throughout Canada. The Ontario government has announced
funding to the tune of $38 million that is specifically targeted at the
treatment, prevention, and awareness of problem gambling throughout the
province. This initiative from the government is one of the most aggressive and
well funded problem gambling campaigns and efforts in the world. Ontario has a
large land gambling industry with two major and large gambling venues; and the
way that things are progressing in Canada, online casinos are a likely next step
for Ontario as well as Canada as a whole.
A key scientist at the Center for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, Nigel
Turner, believes that the key issue lying within the problem gambling rates all
over the world is awareness of the issue. Problem gambling awareness is quite
low and all over the world there are actually very few campaigns that are
specifically designed at awareness of the problem as a key way to mitigate the
spread of problem gambling at land and online casinos. The Ontario province is
setting a very good model for the rest of the country when it comes to social
responsibility and preemptive campaigns for the land and online casino gambling
industries.
The actual dollar numbers of support for the campaign really indicate the role
that each element problem gambling plays in the entire situation. Of the $38
million in funding, $4 million is specifically earmarked for problem gambling
research, $9 million for prevention measures, and a significant $23.6 million is
aimed at treatment of the existing problem. |
