Unfunny Finnish Changes
It’s really getting pretty tiresome to continually report on the state of the
online casino gambling industry in the European Union – about a dozen nations
refuse to comply with the European Commission’s requests for a fair and open
market. Finland is one of the troublesome countries that insists on operating a
state owned gaming monopoly while also maintaining controversial legislation and
regulations aimed at criminalizing and preventing foreign online casinos from
entering the market. The newest news out of Finland indicates that online
casinos and internet gambling companies will not be allowed to advertise within
the Finnish market.
The only fair part about the new legislation is that Parliament has made the
change effective on all gambling companies – Finnish gambling is illegal and
state and foreign online casinos and land gambling companies are banned from
advertising within any medium. The new restrictions would apply to all of the
gaming companies and even indirect forms of advertising such as sponsorship
deals – the government feels that this may be a pretty positive option because
of support for the Finnish monopoly with the state citizens.
One surprising fact about the Finnish online casino gambling market is the fact
that many Finlanders are supportive of the government’s decision to close the
Finnish market to foreign gambling companies. A fairly recent survey in the
market indicates that nearly 82 percent of the Finnish people poled support the
government’s monopoly – that’s particularly surprising when you consider that
outside competition means more options and often better odds at the betting
sites. |
