Sunny Poker Prospects
Surprising news out of the United States indicates that Florida could be the
first US state to openly embrace online poker gambling despite the UIGEA.
Internet casinos are still banned throughout the US as a part of the UIGEA, but
the Florida legislature has passed a piece of legislation that will see the
state carry out a study of the effects of online poker on land gambling venues
that also offer poker. Once the study is completed it could pave the way for new
policies in the state that are much more inclusive of the online casino gambling
industry. Internet gambling, even simply internet poker, has been vilified in
the US and in several of the US states – Kentucky has waged war against the
online gambling industry and Washington State made internet poker a felony
offence.
But for the Sunshine State, the piece of legislation containing the online
casino poker study passed with the overwhelming support of politicians and
really has a lot of strong backing in the state. There is no way to know what
the study will conclude about the long term effects of the online poker industry
on the land casinos and betting venues, but the lobbying groups in the state are
quite optimistic about the prospects of internet poker gambling passing through
into law in the state.
There has been a lot of speculation about whether the Florida government has the
right to pass legislation that would seemingly negate some of the terms of the
UIGEA, a piece of controversial federal legislation. Some though argue that the
UIGEA specifically forbids the foreign online casinos from tapping into the
whole US market – inter-state betting is still illegal. But if Florida operates
an internet poker site that can contain the online betting and gambling to
within the state’s borders then some lawmakers feel that the legislation is
still within the bounds of the UIGEA. |
