Silencing Free Speech
The United States seems to be just dead set on going to any means necessary to
block and ban online casino gambling in the country even if this means that
the basic right of free speech is hampered. At the federal level, the UIGEA is
highly controversial and there are many who would say that the UIGEA restricts
basic civil liberties and attempts to overexert control on what Americans are
doing in the privacy of the own homes a strong effort is in place to repeal or
neutralize the UIGEA and instead legalize and regulate the domestic and offshore
online casinos. This new legislation may happen at some time in the next year or
so, but in the mean time, there are additional grievances to be had in the state
legislation and the way that the individual US states are handing the online
gambling industry issues.
Another major issue facing the online casino gambling industry and an issue of
the government overstepping its rights is the Kentucky situation. The Kentucky
governor is pretty gung-ho on banning internet gambling sites from the Kentucky
market. This in and of itself is not wholly negative; the decision to attempt
the confiscation and seizure of international online casino domain names though
is a serious infringement on cyber neutrality laws. The Kentucky situation
indicates that the state government has little concern for interests outside of
expressly benefiting the Kentucky market, even if the actual seizure of online
gambling domain names would cause some serious international rows.
Lastly, the Washington State situation really brings to mind the idea of freedom
of speech not only does the government ban the online casinos, but its a
Class C felony offense. And in the latest move, the government sent a Cease and
Desist letter to PRWeb demanding that the PR company stop the writing and
release of online casino gambling press releases or press releases for any of
the related industries.
