Selective Banning
A major complaint against the US online casino gambling industry centers on the
fact that the US specifically discriminates against foreign internet gambling
sites while allowing certain sectors of the internet gambling industry to
flourish in the US market. Those opponents of the internet gambling industry
claim that the online casinos are dangerous for the nation’s youth – that is the
premise under which some politicians have justified the UIGEA. At the same time,
sportsbetting is a sector of the market that is shielded from the UIGEA
enforcement efforts by specific carve-outs designed to protect American internet
betting sites that operate for horseracing and other sanctioned sporting events.
The latest controversy in the online gambling industry centers on the fact that
ESPN is now sponsored by the Youbet.com site and liberally advertises on ESPN.
If the argument against offshore online casinos centers on the underage gambling
debate then there is a big issue with the fact ESPN is offering up
advertisements for internet betting. The ESPN demographic of viewers most
certainly contains a large percentage of teenage and underage males. The fact
that the Youbet.com site is now allowed to advertise on the network and within
site of the youth is concerning for offshore online casino betting companies
that vacated the US market on the premise of youth protection.
There is a lot of hypocrisy in this latest move by ESPN – and it seems as though
every state is in on it. Although the Kentucky government has become notorious
for the latest efforts to prevent foreign online casinos and betting companies
from accessing the market, Kentucky has willing aired the Youbet.com
advertisements throughout this past horseracing season. |
