Defeating the New Bill
The conservatives are out in force lately in efforts to stop new online casino
gambling legislation from passing through the government. The UIGEA is still in
effect and many conservatives as well as several US sports related organizations
strongly support the continuation of the UIGEA. The international community on
the other hand, and a lot of liberals (as well as conservatives with an eye
toward preventing unneeded restrictions of personal freedoms) are pushing for
new online casino gambling legislation. The main problem facing the new gambling
bill is the fact that it is much harder for politicians to reverse something
that has already been passed than to pass the first piece of legislation related
to the issue.
The UIGEA is highly flawed and illegally blocks offshore online casinos from
accessing the US market. The UIGEA also provides carve-outs for several sectors
of the industry that specifically benefit US sports leagues. The new bill though
has some enemies and is facing an uphill battle before there is hope that
Congress will approve the new bill. The opposition does not have a new tactic,
but rather continues to chant the same old tune about internet gambling
companies running wild in the industry and destroying American youth.
Unfortunately, the scare tactics are often effective and many US politicians are
siding with keeping the status quo rather than rocking the boat with more online
casino gambling legislation. Although the UIGEA is flawed and causes
international issues, many politicians are unwilling to voluntarily pass
internet gambling legislation that would allow for a regulated internet gambling
market. Efforts are still continuing strong though throughout the US and
although there is opposition to Barney Frank’s bills and efforts to legalized,
license, and regulated online casinos, the PPA and other supporters are
spreading the word and getting their voice heard as well. |
