Where's the Money?
Kentucky governor Steve Beshear has quite a tough situation on his hands these
days with the current recession exacerbating the dismal state of the state’s
financial situation -- in particular the budget for the Department of Public
Advocacy has been in a sharp decline lately. There is no denying that all of the
recent media attention that is focused on Kentucky as a part of the online
casino domain name seizure case is a direct result of the fact that the funds
are just not really there to support the state’s budget these days. The problem
is though, as the budget woes increase Governor Steve Beshear’s questionable
actions related to the online casinos increase in fervor.
Basically, Beshear has adamantly pursued the online casino domain name situation
because he is looking at protecting the state land gambling interests as a way
to keep more money flowing into the government’s budget. Beshear is specifically
anti-online casinos because they take revenues away from the land gambling and
betting facilities and that means that the government doesn’t receive any tax
monies from the wagers made online.
All of the US states are finding times are particularly tough these days – and
states like Kentucky look to the profit potential of land gambling as a
salvation of sorts. In Kentucky, as the governor considers expansions within the
land gambling and betting industry, the online casinos are a direct and
identifiable threat to increasing the amount of tax revenue coming directly into
the state’s general budget. |
