PPA's Effect on the Gaming Landscape
The Poker Players Alliance is one of the key online casino lobbying groups in
the United States. The Alliance has well over one million members right now all
with a common interest: the legalization of internet poker in the US market. The
PPA spends millions of dollars each year in lobbying funds to educate
politicians about the UIGEA and the state of online casino gambling in the
country. When the UIGEA first passed there were many members of Congress who had
no clue as to what the UIGEA was or the huge effect that it had on the US
internet gambling industry. Over the last several years the PPA has played a key
and integral role in shaping the way that the US government is thinking about
the online casino gambling issue.
Lobbying funds are gathered from member dues and donations and have been used to
not only pay lobbying companies in Washington DC, but to also form and print out
information packets that were then distributed to members of Congress. The PPA
had a major push about a year ago to reach the one million member mark; the
reason for this being that the politicians would have a harder time openly
dismissing the point of view of more than one million US citizens. New efforts
are underway to now keep the members signed up for another year.
The US is still banning foreign online casinos and internet poker sites which
means that the PPA’s work is still there and in need of support from the US
citizens. In addition to work at the federal level, the PPA has been
instrumental in shaping some of the individual state policies – and is still
actually working in some of the states to stop unfavorable legislation and
policies from passing through. |
