Addiction an Issue
The social issues surrounding the online casino gambling industry are really
ongoing and not likely to find a resolution anytime in the near future without
some serious research on the subject. A lot of critics of the internet gambling
industry claim that the online casinos have exacerbated gambling addiction
issues that started in the land gambling industry. Because there are less social
controls surrounding at-home play, and gamblers can use their credit cards to
refill their accounts, critics argue that the internet casinos are just setting
the system up to cater to addiction.
While that sentiment might be a bit exaggerated, there is truth in the argument
against credit cards…gambling on credit is never a good idea, even for the
controlled internet gamblers. There have been a lot of conflicting research and
statistics released over the past couple of years relating to the online casino
gambling industry – namely, some opponents are quick to claim that gambling
addiction rates are skyrocketing as internet gambling becomes more popular. On
the flip side though, some problem gambling research centers have actually noted
a drastic decrease in the number of new problem gambling cases cropping up.
There are two sides to every issue and although gambling addiction will likely
never truly be eradicated, the online casinos and the gambling industry on the
whole do take responsibility for the problem and offer up a variety of services
aimed at lessening the prevalence of problem gambling. Unfortunately for the
online gambling sites, the addiction issue is just one of many problems that
have cropped up in recent years surrounding the gambling industry as a whole –
arguments surrounding underage gambling are also quite prominent and often
provide a strong argument for tighter controls on the internet gambling
industry. |
