The South is Making it Happen
Online casino gambling is illegal in the United States – there is no two ways
about it, the US federal government has chosen to prosecute companies that act
in violation of the flawed UIGEA. With that being said though, the UIGEA does
have a little bit of flexibility built into in terms of which types of internet
gambling are permissible – sports betting is in the clear but online poker is
still taboo. Additionally, many US states are now looking at the specific
wording of the UIGEA and contending that internet poker is not actually illegal
unless it crosses state borders – this means that some states are actually
seriously considering passing new legislation that would institute a state
internet poker industry that specifically avoids the bans that prohibit offshore
online casinos from operating in the market.
The south of the United States is, surprisingly, the region really looking at
pressing the boundaries of the UIGEA and possibly legalizing online poker. Both
the Florida and the South Carolina legislatures are actually considering passing
bills that call for a regulated and licensed formal internet poker industry. The
reasoning behind the new legislation is partly because it is called for so
adamantly by US citizens in both of the sites, but really, that alone would not
be enough to make the state legislatures consider the expansion of the land and
online casino gambling industry. In actuality, the states are strongly
considering allowing internet poker as a way to further fund the state coffers
during the economic recession.
While the south of the US is making some waves in the media the efforts in
California seem to have stalled. Just last year several California politicians
were attempting to push through new legislation that would also allow the state
to allow online casino poker to California residents specifically – this though
has taken a bit of a back seat during the recession. |
