For the Love of Poker
The fascination with online casinos and internet poker gambling has not waned in
the slightest over the past several years that the controversial UIGEA has been
in effect. The UIGEA was designed to put a stop to offshore online casino sites
accepting and processing transactions from US players – the legislation is
largely ineffective, however, and US gamblers have still consistently found a
way to access the sites. In fact, the fascination with internet poker goes even
beyond playing at the online poker venues and includes watching the pastime on
the television. A new US show announced on the G4 cable channel features a
season of four internet poker gamblers facing off over the course of the show to
win as much as $2 million in winnings throughout the 10 episodes/tourneys.
Poker gambling has been around for decades and the prominence of the game has
only surged in the past decade as media and technology advancements have brought
the game to even more individuals all over the globe. International championship
tournaments and events like the World Series of Poker generate annual excitement
for the game of poker in general. Then the online casinos and internet poker
sites pick up on the excitement and offer up seats to the WSOP, prize packages
and other poker related promotions.
Now, with this new television show, online casino gamblers in the US have a way
to tap into the game through a new medium. Although home participation in poker
through the TV is not yet possible, the new television program is generating a
lot of excitement in the industry and will air in the coming fall television
season. |
