Personal Filtering Possible
The Australian government has been all over the industry media over the past
several months because of its attempts to block online casino gambling all over
the country at the ISP level. There is a lot of controversy right now from those
concerned with internet censorship and its effect on free speech laws. Senator
Stephen Conroy has spearheaded the new filtering and censorship laws. The most
controversial part of Conroy’s proposed new policy is the Australia-wide ban on
online caisno gambling. The other part of the legislation is actually pretty
strong – Conroy wants every Australian household to have the ability to filter
the internet content streaming into their homes.
This is a measure that is aimed at really protecting the nation’s youth from
dangerous content on the internet. Many Australians though argue that they
should have the personal right to block the online casinos in the same way they
would any of the rest of the filtered content. Just like in the United States,
the citizens are pushing for more autonomy. If the filtering system works, and
the premise is to protect underage gamblers from online casino gambling sites,
then there is no reason for the government to step in and further restrict the
rights of Australians…at least, that’s the theory.
The new filtering and online casino gambling banning process will cost the
Australian government as much as $128.5 million to implement. Conroy has noted
that the emphasis is not only on implementing the new filtering system but also
on educating Australians about how to effectively use the system to protect
their homes. |
