The Delaware Choice
The recession in the United States is becoming more and more of a focus for the
individual states in the US – the recession has meant budget deficits and tough
times. Some states though do see a dim light at the end of the tunnel, gambling.
The online casino gambling industry is taboo in the US because of federal
legislation, but that doesn’t mean that some states that have long kept land
gambling away from their borders aren’t reconsidering the lucrative nature of
some sectors of the land gambling industry as a way to generate more tax revenue
supporting the state budget. Delaware is one of the US states that has always
shunned land and online casino gambling but is now in a pretty serious deficit
and considering an option that would legalize a sportsbetting lottery of sorts.
Delaware is not the first US state to announce plans to expand land gambling
interests (since online casinos are unfortunately not an option at this time),
Kentucky and others have similar plans. In Delaware, Governor Jack Markell has
announced that a plan to possibly institute a state sportsbetting lottery could
be the key to funding the remaining $700 million needed to successfully operate
the state’s budget.
Tax revenues from the land casinos and gambling sectors generate more that $5
billion annually in tax revenues; states that have banned these pastimes are now
left with few other options if they hope to successfully weather the recession.
If the Delaware governor passes the proposed new legislation his efforts will
become a bit of a test for the other states considering drastically altering
land casino gambling policies – success will likely mean that other states will
rapidly follow suit. |
