Eating Crow
The results released from a study on online casino gambling that was conducted
by the Harvard Medical School were really quite surprising to a whole lot of
people on both sides of the internet gambling debate. The US currently bans
offshore online casinos based on the notion of protecting US gamblers – the new
Harvard study may just have some politicians who were on the fence about the
issue thinking a bit more about the merits of legalized gambling in the US
market. The Harvard study was specifically performed to analyze gambling
addiction rates and assess whether internet gambling has caused an increase in
gambling addition.
The naysayers who vehemently oppose the online casinos based on the assumption
that gamblers are more likely to become addicted to internet gambling may just
have to watch their arguments. The Harvard study found that the vase majority of
online casino gamblers are actually very responsible in their gambling habits –
perhaps even better than the land gambling industry. Internet gamblers are
pretty solid in their ability to self-monitor their expenditures and ensure that
they are only gambling moderately.
This is not to say that there are not problem gamblers arising out of the online
casinos – because there are. But the Harvard study indicated that as many of 95
percent of the internet gamblers had consistent and moderate gambling habits.
This means that opponents to internet gambling on the grounds of problem
gambling addiction have to rethink some of their arguments because of these
surprising findings. The Harvard Study concluded that problem gambling levels
have not actually increased as a result of an increase in online gambling.
