Cracking Down in Oz

The Australian government is really looking to crack down on all forms of illegal gambling in the nation – from the online casinos to the land gambling pubs. Hotels and pubs are now under threat of further governmental interference if they are running any sort of land (and certainly online) gambling operations. This means that poker pubs may just have to alter the way that they offer the poker games – free gaming is legal, but if the pubs allow gamblers to buy food and other goods and services in exchange for the poker play then they are engaging in real-money poker gambling and the South Australian government and police plan to start enforcing anti-gambling laws.

It really isn’t much of a surprise that this crackdown is occurring – the Australian government has made international headlines over the past several months because of efforts to force-block online casino gambling in the country. To learn that poker pub leagues are also under threat is very little of a surprise really. In addition to the poker pub leagues, Australian hotels have been warned by the Australian Hotels Association to stop any form of illegal gambling that is offered at the venues – this warning extends to the pubs as well.

Legal land and online casino gambling is possible – if there is no money involved. All of these venues that are currently offering forms of pay poker pub leagues and tournaments will have to completely alter the payment system to account for the crackdown on illegal gambling.
