Land Companies Compete
A resounding call is coming up from a huge portion of the land gambling industry
– legalize online casinos and allow the companies to be competitive in the
market. The South African market is slowly evolving toward the legalization of
internet gambling – new regulations are months away right now. Like the land
casinos operating in the US, competition from the illegal gambling market has
proven devastating to profits and revenues. To that end, many land gambling
groups are pushing for the legalization of the market for several reasons –
chief of which is a more level playing field where the land gambling venues have
the opportunity to be competitive with the foreign gambling companies.
Legalized online casinos in South Africa (and perhaps eventually the US) means
that the internet gambling venues will be subject to taxation laws, just as the
land gambling venues. A major concern echoing through the industry is the fact
that online gambling sites that operate illegally are able to offer gamblers
bettor odds in sportsbetting and higher returns on their money because the
companies are not paying taxes to the South African government. With the
licensed sites however, those companies will now also adhere to strict taxation
guidelines.
In addition to the taxation situation, the land casinos are excited by the
profits of entering the online gambling themselves in many cases. In South
Africa, the major land gambling and betting groups, Peermont and Phumelela have
both confirmed that they will seek out a SA internet gambling license when the
new regulations are passed. If the companies are granted a license they will
reap even more profits and will then have the ability to tie in promotions
between their land and online operations. |
