Protecting Children from Online Casinos

The online casino gambling industry is changing rapidly and expanding into new sectors of the global market – and with the expansion some are opining that the industry is throwing caution to the wind and putting the world’s youth at risk. Unfortunately, underage gambling has become a real problem all over the world and is an issue that countries with regulated gambling industries are trying to address. In the UK, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) was formed as a way to monitor the online casinos as they market their products on the airways, through newspapers and a slew of additional media. Since the more liberal advertising regulations passed though, the ASA has had its hands full in keeping the gambling advertisements in line with regulations.

Lately it seems that everything you see on TV is too risqué and sexualized – for online casinos especially they have to watch the imagery and language used because of how sensitized the public is to the issue of underage and problem gambling. The ASA has been forced to ban ads for a variety of reasons – a complaint to the ASA about the use of a fairground in the commercial brought about a ban because of the alleged appeal to children. Advertisements that imply any sort of addictive land or online casino gambling habit are outright banned and equating the industry with sexuality is also taboo.

Through all of this though lies a big question…is it helping the youth and problem gamblers stay away from the online casinos? The ASA pushes the message of responsible gaming – that the gaming sites should take the high road and do everything in their power to prevent problem and underage gambling. Those companies that are not vigilant about their ads will just face a banning from the ASA.
