Case Destroys Casino
The lack of clear land and online casino gambling legislation in Ireland has
really had a negative effect on some of the companies that operate within the
country. The government took up a case against a land gambling club in Clonmel,
County Tipperary; the Atlantis Casino Club was taken to court by the state
government nearly a year ago – now that a resolution has finally been handed
down it looks as though it was a bit to late to save the business. The police
raided the club last year and the case subsequently went into the court system –
the courts have sided with the Atlantis Club Casino for legally operating within
the limits of the nation’s 1956 Gaming and Lotteries Act. But the owner of the
Club notes that the raid may have just made continued operation of the company
impossible.
This case, though sad for Atlantis club, is a bit of a victory for the land
casinos. Ireland has dozens of private clubs operating throughout the country
and there has always been a bit of confusion as to whether the companies were
operating within the limits of the law. The precedence set by this case is
really quite positive for the land casino clubs who have always wondering how
the situation would pan out in the courts – the private clubs pay their taxes
just like any other legal business.
As for why Atlantis Casino Club is probably done for good – the owner notes that
the previous backers of the club are unlikely to pony up the needed funds once
again. There is a big push in Ireland right now to clarify legislation related
to land and online casinos so that the gaming and gambling companies are very
clear on how they fit into the framework of the Irish gambling industry. |
