It's Not All Bad
There is a lot to think about when the merits of the online casino gambling
industry are discussed – pros and cons on both sides. There are a lot of people
who are quick to point out the faults of the industry and some others who are
certainly overly optimistic about the positive side of internet…the truth of the
situation lies somewhere in the middle of it all. The same could be said with
just about any polarized issue. Right now, the Australian government is really
focusing on new legislation that would block online casinos from the Australian
market. The industry and general media have painted Senator Conroy’s legislation
in a pretty negative light, and though there are some real poor points in his
legislation, there is also merit.
Conroy’s controversial legislation concerns the online casinos and the fact that
they are illegally operating in the Australian market. To protect Aussies from
the downfalls and shortcomings of the industry (namely problem and underage
gambling), Conroy’s legislation aims at blocking the online gambling sites at
the ISP (internet service provider) level. This has sent the Aussies and the
public community abuzz because of the negative implications that internet
censorship will have on the global community. But there is more to Conroy’s
bill, and it deserves some valid consideration.
Conroy’s legislation also aims at putting the power of filtering right at the
fingertips of parents and families. A big issue for Conroy, even beyond the
online casinos is protection of Australia’s youth – this legislation would not
only block the ISPs, but would also ensure additional protection that parents
could provide for their children. |
