Another Online Casino Monopoly
The latest news out of Europe indicates that another online casino gambling
monopoly is under way now that the Swiss government is getting involved in
regulating and licensing the internet gambling sites. Switzerland is the EU
member state that normally remains neutral on just about anything – on this
issue though the Swiss government has passed through legislation that will allow
the government to grant licenses to the online casinos and internet gambling
sites able to operate in the market. This decision was made because of the fact
that all sorts of illegal internet gambling is already occurring across the
nation; with a licensing system in place the internet gambling industry will be
safer for Swiss gamblers.
The European Commission has no problem with internet gambling sites regulating
and licensing their home online casino gambling industries – the issue arises
when the new regulations are protectionist in nature and designed to keep
foreign competition out of the market. There was no clear indication of the
Swiss government’s intentions at first, but now it seems as if the licensing
authorities are giving clear preference to Swiss online casinos and gambling
companies over foreign gaming sites that already have a share of the Swiss
market. The new licensing system is not yet fully implemented but there are
hopes that early intervention by the Commission will stop a new monopoly from
forming.
The Swiss authorities still have the opportunity to avoid a conflict with the
European Commission by licensing foreign online casinos. At this point the
industry is in a holding pattern of sorts, with breath held, and high hopes that
Switzerland will not go the protectionist route. |
