Strong Position on Online Casinos: 2
The position paper from CEI (Competitive Enterprise Insitute) really asserts
that the online casino gambling industry in the US suffers from misconceptions
that are perpetuated by politicians that have their own agendas on the line
rather than the best interests of US gamblers. There is no doubting the
assertion that the US internet gambling industry is much less safe for gamblers
now that most of the regulated European online casinos have exited from the
market. The pro-UIGEA politicians claim their efforts are giving more safety to
the US internet gambling industry but really they have merely created a vast
unregulated black market where really only some of the more unscrupulous
internet casino gambling companies dare to operate.
The position paper really emphasizes the negative differences in the US online
casino gambling industry that have taken effect since the UIGEA came into effect
and the reputable and regulated sites left the market. Another major point in
the position paper is the misconception by many gamblers and even other
politicians that falsely believe that the UIGEA prohibits internet gambling – it
doesn’t. For that very reason, because there is no risk for internet gamblers
(except in Utah and Washington State) there are always going to be online
casinos finding a way to circumvent the financial transaction restrictions.
The position paper emphasizes the point that regulation of the online casino
gambling industry IS possible and effective. The US though is too focused on
perpetuating the mess of one piece of controversial and flawed legislation to
admit that the UIGEA was a mistake and that licensing and regulation is the only
real way to protect US internet gamblers from all of the perceived and real
dangers associated with the industry. |
