Shurtleff Supports Online Casinos
Support of the online casino gambling industry has come from one of the most
unlikely places – Utah. This state is pretty much straight up against gambling
in any form (the state has a largely Mormon population) and there are no land
gambling opportunities in the state. But the industry news has been alight with
the news that the Utah Attorney General, Mark Shurtleff, is speaking out in
support of Barney Frank’s efforts to regulate and license online casinos in the
US market. Shurtleff first went public with his support in an interview with a
popular radio station. Now Shurtleff continues to speak out with his support of
the legalization of US internet gambling by speaking with the Poker Players
Alliance about the efforts needed to bring about some change where the US
gambling laws are concerned.
Shurtleff notes that even with the UIGEA in place and with the UGIEA support
regulations, online casino gambling is inevitable and needs to be properly
regulated as a way to protect US gamblers from unscrupulous sites and companies.
And while Shurtleff has given some out-right support of Barney Frank’s efforts
to neutralize the UIGEA with new legislation, he is also quick to note that he
believes that the US would need some very very strict support regulations in
place if online casinos were, in fact, legalized in country.
Shurtleff also elaborated with the PPA about his concerns that land gambling
continue to stay out of Utah – he feels that while online casino gambling is
inevitable land gambling at tribal venues or in any form should still stay
prohibited in Utah. |
