The Issue is Heated
Gambling in the United State is a hot topic all over the world. The foreign
online casinos have their opinion on the matter, the World Trade Organization
has weighed in on the issue, US politicians have heated up the floor of Congress
with their debates on the legality of the UIGEA, and the American Gaming
Association, not one to be left out, has spent huge sums of money last year on
lobbying efforts specifically related to the internet gambling industry. The AGA
represents the majority interest of the US land casino gambling industry. The
Association has produced a mixed response to the online gambling debate but is
mostly pressing for the US government to authorize a study of the pastime and
its potential effects and growth in the US market before any additional new
regulations and legislations are passed regarding internet casinos.
All companies in the US are required to disclose the sums of money they spend on
lobbying efforts and they have to briefly relate what the money went in support
of, or against. The news that the AGA is once again calling for a study of
internet gambling is not really big news to the online casino gambling industry
– this has been consistently the AGA’s position on the issue. But the sums of
money being spent on lobbying efforts are surprisingly huge. AGA apparently
spent $368,000 on online caisno gambling related lobbying efforts in the fourth
quarter of the year alone.
The AGA spent some of the money to lobby for a study of the US online casino
gambling industry. Other monies though are joining into the pot of lobbying
funds from companies like the PPA and other groups that are calling for a
clarification of the UIGEA and more precise legislation for the internet
casinos. Most of the AGA’s base of land gambling companies support the efforts
to study this new medium of internet gambling but many are torn 50-50 in
supporting the legalization and regulation of the US based industry. |
