The Fine Line of Protection
Free and democratic nations all over the world have to walk a fine line when it
comes to overstepping boundaries in the name of protection for its people. This
issue is now cropping up in the online caisno gambling industry as the European
Parliament is considering new laws and legislation that would provide higher
levels of protection for user data on the internet. Europeans enter their
personal and private information in any number of a dozen of sites and
Parliament is considering measures that can be put in place to ensure that the
information stays private from the criminals, but also from excessive
interference from the government.
The US has encountered this issue in the past and controversially instituted the
Patriot Act, which drastically reduced the privacy of citizens in any number of
situations, including the internet. For the European parliament, the new
attempts to provide protections to internet users would be to specifically
address the criminality that is cropping up in the online caisno gambling
industry.
Basically, the Parliament is considering instituting additional monitoring
measures and basic standards that all of the internet based companies, including
the online casinos, would have to adhere to in the name of user data protection.
Concerns are already mounting though that this will “turn our societies
stealthily into a Big Brother society,” commented the Greek MEP, Stavros
Lambrinidis. There is that concern, and it is valid, at this point Lambrinidis
is preparing a report on the issue that will then be up for discussion before
any new laws are implemented. |
