Where's the Line Drawn?
Internet education is the latest issue in Australia as that nation plunges head
first into the digital age. Australia’s internet economy has been a bit behind
some of the rest of the Western world and the Australian government is concerned
that citizens are not using caution and security practices on their end as far
as securing the actual home internet connection is concerned as well as
successfully monitoring when and how they share personal data when online. With
online casinos vying for entry into the market and internet betting already
becoming one of the fastest growing online industries in the country, internet
literacy is a renewed concern for the Australian Communication and Media
Authority.
As the Australian Media Authority considers this issue from that end of the
spectrum, the rest of the world, and the online casino gambling industry in
particular is watching the development of these discussions with keen interest.
The Australian government is now on a watch-list of countries that are employing
questionable regulations on the use of the internet. The Australian government,
in attempts to block prohibited sites like online casinos, pornography, and
other morally questionable industries has been one of the first of the major
Western countries to consider hard-core internet censorship legislation.
These discussions have reporters and other countries all over the world watching
closely to ensure that the Australian government doesn’t overstep it authority
and unnecessarily censor the online industries and thus infringe on the civil
liberties of Australians. The online casino gambling issue is a big concern for
the government, but there is far more at stake then just gambling sites – there
is a proposal on the table to expand the list of banned and blocked sites from
more than 1,000 sites 10,000 at least – this has many concerned. |
