It Comes Down to Safety
The UIGEA has had more than two years now to come into effect and alter the
landscape of the US online casino gambling industry. In those two years, despite
the fact that internet gambling has been banned from the market and many
European online casinos have been prosecuted, there is still a large market in
the US even this long after the UIGEA came into effect. Basically, because the
UIGEA was passed without its support regulations and with a lot of ambiguity in
the writing, there have been no clear ways to enforce this controversial
legislation. Now that the UIGEA regulations have passed it seems increasingly
unlikely that the US can actually effectively restrict online casinos from the
market – the ban has only managed to create an unsafe black market for the
internet activity.
Essentially, most of the online casinos with decent regulations and policies and
procedures in place have left the US market at the threat of the US Department
of Justice. Now, the only gaming sites willing to enter the market are of a
lower caliber site and the gamblers are at a higher risk for unscrupulous
behaviors. US gamblers are now more at risk when they gamble at the online
casino gambling sites than ever before. With an open market at least the quality
gaming sites were able to take a share of the market, with a closed market only
the less reputable companies are risking entanglement with the DOJ.
To that end, with the realization that the US government may actually never
quite effectively block online casino gambling in the US, supporters for a
repeal of the UIGEA are coming out of the woodwork – from both political parties
and every religion, regulated internet gambling is looking to be the only viable
option at this point.
