Philippines Does Not Want Online Casinos
Online casino gambling in the Asian-Pacific area is a really sticky subject for
two major reasons: one, the international internet gambling industry is pushing
hard for the opening of this region, and two, the various governments are
strictly against the expansion of internet gambling in any form. The latest news
out of the Philippines is a big push to shut down the Meridien Vista Gaming
Corp. This company offers a form of internet gambling that the Cagayan Economic
Zone Authority (CEZA) has deemed illegal and out of the bounds of the law. CEZA
is now looking to delist this company because of its attempts to offer forms of
online casino gambling to the region.
On the flip side, Meridien Vista claims that the game they offer is unlike the
online caisno gambling industry in every way, and unlike both small town
lotteries and Jueteng. Jeuteng is an immensely popular game throughout Asia and
has been played for decades in varying forms. Basically the game is a form of
betting game that offers some extremely long odds on the bets – each play there
is only a 1/666 chance of hitting the right number combination and thus taking
home winnings. This game is only growing in popularity despite heavy laws
against it (both on land and at the online casinos).
So, for the Spanish-owned Meridien Vista, association with this game is
unwanted…but it does bet the question, if Meridien isn’t operating Jeuteng, and
it isn’t offering a lottery format, just what gaming product is the company
offering that is so taboo in the CEZA? |
