Who Gets the Control?
There is a fine line of balance in Europe right now with the online casino
gambling and betting legislation and regulations. Basically, each individual
nation is free to shape their own land and internet gambling policies so long as
they adhere to the principles and policies spelled out in the EU Treaty. The
fact that several nations are not adhering to the principles through their use
of protectionist legislation aimed at other EU nation’s licensed online casinos
is a moot point right now. Instead, the focus is on the fact that the European
Parliament is making a pretty important decision, one that will greatly affect
the way that online sportsbetting is handled throughout the EU.
The online sportsbetting industry is simply massive throughout Europe. And
though the EU has not interfered in the online casino gambling industry
regulations, the internet betting industry is a whole different industry and one
that could become huge if the idea of “integrity in gambling” is brought into
the debate. With the sportsbetting industry there are strong concerns about
fixed matches and other corruptions – these are both activities that could
severely damage European sports if there were even whispers of rampant cheating.
To that end, the European Parliament may just decide that online sportsbetting
in particular is best managed by European rules.
There are supporters on both sides of the issues; those supporting national
regulation of online casino sportsbetting activities and those that continue to
believe that state gambling regulations do not do enough to protect European
citizens (this is the echoing argument for countries that continue to operate
state monopolies). The decision is pending and according to the latest
information the issue is scheduled for debate and decision in Strasbourg. |
