The Chosen One
The UK has to conduct gambling prevalence surveys on a regular basis as a
condition of the 2005 Gambling Act in the UK that has allowed for the online
casino gambling industry in the UK to expand significantly over the past couple
of years. The UK gambling industry is one of the largest and most stringently
regulated in the world – and to assess weather the gambling regulations are
working, the UK Gambling Commission appoints an unbiased research center to
conduct the survey. Basically, the Gambling Commission needs to ensure that
problem gambling levels in the UK are not getting any worse now that the online
casinos have more freedoms in the market.
There has been a lot of controversy in the past over the problem gambling
statistics that come out of the UK – many doubt that it’s possible for the UK
problem gambling stats to remain at similar numbers. And in fact, more UK
gamblers are showing signs of problem gambling at the online casinos. But,
importantly, the percentages of the gambling population that have problem
gambling behaviors are remaining nearly the same – and that’s what the
Commission is really focused on.
As for the news on the 2010 British Gambling Prevalence Survey, the National
Centre for Social Research has been chosen to conduct this wide-scale study of
the land and online casino gambling industries and the numbers of problem
gamblers within both of these industries. The surveys are done every five years
or so to provide continual statistics that the Gambling Commission can then use
to keep the problem gambling levels at acceptable low figures. |
