Sportsbetting Ban Attacked
New Jersey seems to be on the attack this month in a bunch of different areas.
Some of the biggest fight is taking place by Frank Catania and his efforts to
repeal the controversial UIGEA, which blocks foreign online casinos from the US
market. The new fight catching headlines this week is spearheaded by Senator
Raymond Lesniak (D). Lesniak is specifically addressing the New Jersey state
legislation than bans sportsbetting transactions in the state.
Lesniak claims that the ban is old and outdated – and that the land casinos and
gambling companies need the ability to place sportsbetting wagers as a way to
stay competitive in the market during these tough economic times. Basically,
since online casinos are banned with federal legislation Lesniak is looking for
the only other legal option that will expand the state gambling industry –
sportsbetting. Lesniak plans to sue the state in his attempts to open up the
sportsbetting market and will file his suit in the courts by the end of the
month.
There is actually a lot riding on the case in the US online casino and land
gambling industries – if Lesniak is successful in repealing the current
sportsbetting ban it will be an indication to gambling supporters in other
states that it is in fact, possible. The specific legislation under attack right
now: The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. The court process might
take some time but Lesniak has a lot of supporter rooting for his cause, so it
is only a matter of time before the verdict is handed down by the New Jersey
District Court. |
