About Time Really
The European Commission is no longer issuing un-enforced threats to the number
of EU member states that refuse to comply with the EU’s policy related to the
free trade of goods and services between EU member-states. Basically, ten
countries have continued for the past several years to ignore the Commission’s
request for an open and free European online casino gambling industry. All of
the countries either operate state monopolies or have protectionist state
legislation in place that is seeking to fine and punish any internet gambling
companies that enter their closed gaming markets. This has been a huge bone of
contention for years now and the online casinos are applauding the Commission’s
latest action – further investigation and likely referrals to the European Court
of Justice for more action and a definitive ruling on the situation.
The latest justice seems to be coming for the Netherlands and Greece. Both of
these countries have been outright stubborn in their assertions that their state
land and online casino gambling monopolies have a right to operate without
interference from outside competition. The latest news out of the Commission
indicates that a full investigation is under way to determine once and for all
if the gambling policies and regulations in these nations are in contravention
of the European Treaty.
The Remote Gaming Association is just one of the many organizations that
represent the online casinos that are now applauding the Commissions more
aggressive steps to put an end to the state monopoly situation that is plaguing
Europe right now and causing some internet casino gambling operators to lose out
of gambling revenues from these closed markets. |
