Internet Wagering Now Available
The online casinos may not be legal in the United States but some state
governments are turning to legal forms of internet gambling as a way to increase
the amount of money making into the state coffers. For weeks now rumors have
swirled through the industry that the Illinois government was considering new
legislation that would legalize internet betting. Although there was some
opposition the support was basically overwhelming. US states have encountered
serious troubles throughout the recession in covering even the most basic parts
of their budget –internet gambling has been broached by many states as a viable
way to raise more money. The state has not only chosen to legalize internet
betting, but video gambling machines are also now available throughout the
state.
The internet betting bill is very specific though. Obviously, online casinos are
illegal but the type of internet betting is additionally restricted. The new
bill approved by legislatures specifically allows for horserace betting through
the internet and from a gambler’s home. These two new pieces of legislation have
now passed into law within the state –the only test left is to determine if the
federal government has anything to say about the legalization of internet
horserace betting.
The UIGEA targets online casinos in particular and provides legislative
carve-outs to protect certain types of in-state internet gambling. Illinois
believes that the UIGEA has legalized internet betting but only time will tell
if the federal government agrees with that assumption. Two other US states have
encountered difficulty running state internet lotteries even though this is
supposed to have specific carve-outs in place too. The Illinois government plans
to continue with the implementation of online betting unless the federal
government chooses to step into the situation. |
