Maintaining Tennis Integrity
The tennis industry is not one of the first sports that many internet bettors
would consider if they were looking for a great game to wager on. At the same
time, the sport of tennis is popular and has its fair share of betting
enthusiasts. As such, like any popular sport, the game of tennis is subject to
integrity concerns and a strict policy concern betting and gambling by the
tennis players themselves. The Tennis Integrity Unit operates in Europe with the
express purpose of keeping tennis players in check as well as monitoring the
betting taking place. The TIU has a zero-tolerance policy toward player betting
and also has regimented rules regarding players relaying information to the TIU
if they are ever approached by land and online casino betting venues or bookies
to throw their matches.
Integrity in sports is the only key to the longevity of the game and the TIU
thoroughly monitors the behaviors of its athletes in an effort to keep
corruption entirely out of the game. The strict guidelines against any form of
land and online casino betting are in place to specifically prevent
opportunities for corruption from arising. This zero-tolerance policy is also
why the Court of Arbitration for Sport laid down a ruling to the young Mathieu
Montcourt that he would not only have to pay a $12,000 fine for his previous
betting activity, but also serve out a five-week ban from the sport.
Montcourt placed 36 small online bets several years ago when he was on a break
from the sport because of an injury. Still a small name on the tennis circuit,
Montcourt never bet on himself but rather on players who he admired. The court
gave no leniency though because the professional tennis playing rules are
forthright and clear –no forms of land and online betting are permissible. |
