China and US on the Same Path
The industry news has really blasted China recently because the Chinese
government is really hitting hard the idea of censorship of internet at the IP
and at the base computer level. The Chinese government has a firmly anti-online
casino gambling stance that has stirred controversy all over the world. A new
policy out of China is mandating that all new computers have filtering software
in place that effectively allows the government to block online casinos. The US
government, in a highly hypocritical move, sent a letter to the Chinese
government protesting the new internet gambling filtering legislation as
contrary to World Trade Organization of rules.
There is a moment where one can only ask…is the US government serious? The US
government has almost the very same internet censorship legislation in place
with the UIGEA as the offshore online casinos are blocked from the US market
through financial transactions. Although the internet sites themselves are not
actually blocked from the internet, US gamblers can still view the Web pages and
can gamble at the sites if they can find one that will accept them, the end
result is basically the same – both countries are looking to eliminate internet
gambling.
The US communiqué was apparently directed at the fact that the Chinese
government wants filtering software built into all of the computers that are
sold in the Chinese market. The government wants to block the online casinos at
a level even beyond the ISPs and the US government is concerned about the lack
of personal freedoms for the Chinese people that this filtering software will
enable. |
